Sustainability, as a whole, encompasses environmental protection, social and economic development, outlining the necessity to meet the needs of the present without compromising those of future generations.
By providing a local and accessible social hub for events and activities to support the health and wellbeing of the local community, the village hall addresses all three pillars of sustainability. It supports the local economy with its affordable hiring rates, and employs local business where possible, for example to carry out maintenance work. The Village Hall strives to keep a low environmental impact, through the use of LED lighting, recycling waste, utilising underfloor heating and heating controls to reduce fuel usage, using locally sourced materials and supporting biodiversity. Additionally, the key function of the Village Hall results in a reduced need for travel by the local community, therefore reducing CO2 emissions within the parish. The Village Hall continuously strives to make improvements to its environmental sustainability where it is viable, for example through encouraging biodiversity, reducing energy usage and promoting environmental protection within the local community.
While possible long term improvements to the environmental sustainability of the hall have been identified, for example alternative energy sources and insulation methods, these require significant funds and resources which at present are not available. These options are therefore deemed disproportionate to the Village Hall’s charitable objectives in the short term.
